Every Word Was Once an Animal - Dance, 2020
The interdisciplinary exhibition blends Carla Bengtson’s playful investigations into the lifeworlds of nonhuman animals with choreographer Darion Smith’s interest in embodied language, composer Juliet Palmer’s investigations into the material possibilities and constraints of human and nonhuman utterance, and artist Jessie Rose Vala’s evocations of the intimate relationship between sculptural form and the mythic mind.

Director/choreographer Darion Smith mixes dance and object to explore the physical and emotional boundaries and connections between people and objects. Smith explores Trust, Curiosity, Courage, Love, and Fear to create the atmospheric nuances throughout the work. In Object, the dancers find beauty in vulnerability, intimate moments, and spur the imagination.

In KinderPlatz dancers make use of a full-scale geodesic dome. Dancer and dome traverse the space simultaneously with video projections from collaborating visual artist Aleksandar Cosic.

Platform transforms the stage into the underground world of the New York City transit system in which a colorful cast of characters collides. In Platform, Smith explores themes that range from love to idiocy through characters that populate an urban underworld.
